WHISKEY LAKE WINS

by Stephanie Olivier-Smith

Whiskey Lake Raceway held races on Saturday July 28 at 8:00.  Classes included street stock, b-modified, hobby stock, mini-stock, and quad.  Fans came to support their family and friends while drivers came for the rewards of competing after a hard week of working on their vehicles.

Some awards drivers received were the K.A.R.M. Trophy Dash’s sponsored by the Kansas Auto Racing Museum in Chapman.  The first trophy dash was in Hobby Stock category. Newcomer Dennis Berry #22 picked up the trophy given by trophy girl Telsa Potts.  Berry states that he has been racing “forever” and that he builds all his own cars and motors.

K.A.R.M. Street Stock Trophy Dash followed.  John Bryce in #57 came from Topeka to pick up this award.  Bryce says “If racing is not fun, it’s not worth it.”

Mini-Stock Feature was next with new racer #3c Allen Rice in what appeared to be a Nissan Sentra.  Rices other vehicle he enjoys racing is a blue Station Wagon.  Mike Traskowsky in #10 had a new patriotic paint job that pushed him to victory. Herington-Woodbines Mike races with his father Fred and Sister Missy.

Twelve Quads lined up for Feature time. Six in front and six on the back stretch of the track.  One driver, Cody Minium #1r, said he had been racing for “ten minutes”.  Minium ranked in fourth place.  Brandon Tapp #3 came in first place with the help of his pals in the audience cheering him on.

A few hits were traded in the competitive Hobby Stock Feature.  Eric Loquist #69l, Chris Lohrey #32, and #74 John Bass collided twice.  Once on turn three and another on turn four, but caution flags were unnecessary.   Lohrey and Loquist lunged together also on the last lap around turn four.  Traskowsky #10 trudged through turmoil and won first place once again.

In the Street Stock competition #2nd Darin Williard spun around on the first and third lap forcing him to visit the pits.  He came back seconds later to finish what he started earning fifth place.  Bryce #57 was on his last lap when his engine overheated and stalled on turn 4.  Bryce was so close to the finish line.  Steve Albrecht #7r from Salina and White City captured the challenging checkered flag.

Ten Brave B-modifieds traveled two by two towards the track.  Engines were revving and drivers were fearless as the race began.  At the first turn on the first lap #14 Ed Mueller lost his traction giving himself a tough start.  In lap four #24 Dennie Gieber and #12b Lance Brooks pulled into the pits for assistance regarding engine and tire mishaps.  In lap thirteen #18 Chase Jungens spun out on turn one.  Jungens is fourteen years old and resides in Manhattan.  Winner of the B-modified feature was #21j Josh Everhart of Osage.
